Action-adventure

Metroid Dread is a 2021 action-adventure video game developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Released on October 8, 2021, the game serves as the ninth main entry in the Metroid series, following Metroid: Other M (2010) and acting as a sequel to Metroid Fusion (2002). It maintains the side-scrolling gameplay style of earlier titles while introducing stealth mechanics. Players take control of bounty hunter Samus Aran as she investigates a strange signal originating from the planet ZDR.

The project was originally conceived by Metroid producer Yoshio Sakamoto for the Nintendo DS around mid-2000s, but development was halted due to technical constraints. Industry analysts later showed strong interest in a new 2D Metroid game, with Dread appearing on many “most wanted” lists. After their involvement in Metroid: Samus Returns (2017), Sakamoto assigned MercurySteam to lead development of Dread. The title was officially unveiled at E3 2021.

Metroid Dread was recognized as one of the top games of 2021 by numerous publications. At the Game Awards 2021, it received two nominations, including Game of the Year, and won Best Action/Adventure Game. It quickly became the fastest-selling Metroid title in Japan, the UK, and the US, selling over three million copies and becoming the best-selling game in the franchise. A follow-up titled Metroid Ravenous is planned for release in 2027 on the Nintendo Switch 2.
