Lake 2021
Lake is a 2021 graphic adventure game developed by Gamious and published by Whitethorn Games. The game takes place in 1986, focusing on Meredith Weiss, a software developer who returns to her hometown of Providence Oaks, Oregon for two weeks. During this time, she temporarily works as the town's mail carrier, interacting with residents while delivering letters. Players make dialogue choices that affect story outcomes and endings.
Development started in 2017 when director Dylan Nagel presented the idea to Gamious. The choice of setting was based on its visual appeal, and the year 1986 was selected for its nostalgic tone. The creative team drew inspiration from American sitcoms and actors, conducting research into narrative-driven adventure games. Extensive study of Oregon's landscape was also part of the development process.
Lake debuted in 2018. It launched on Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in September 2021, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in April 2022, Stadia in June 2022, and Nintendo Switch in February 2024. Reviews were mixed, with praise for its world-building, characters, and acting; however, critics were divided regarding repetitive gameplay and music. A downloadable content prequel featuring Meredith's father during Christmas was released in November 2023.
