First-person shooter

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a 2026 first-person shooter video game developed by Halo Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. It serves as a remake of the story mode from Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), the initial title in the Halo series originally created by Bungie for the Xbox platform. The release occurred for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on July 28, 2026. Campaign Evolved marks the 25th anniversary of both the Halo franchise and the Xbox system it began on.

Built using Unreal Engine 5, Campaign Evolved presents updated visuals along with redesigned and modified levels. Elements such as gameplay mechanics, weapons, and story components from later Halo titles have been integrated into this version. Story sequences and soundtracks were also remade, including newly recorded voice lines from the main cast. The game excludes the original competitive multiplayer from Combat Evolved but introduces four-player online cooperative play and two-player split-screen support on consoles. Additionally, Campaign Evolved enables cross-platform gameplay and progression sharing across all consoles and PC during co-op sessions.

343 Industries took over the Halo franchise after Bungie released Halo: Reach in 2010, starting with the remastered Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (2011) for Xbox 360, followed by new mainline entries including Halo 4 in 2012. The development group underwent restructuring and rebranding to Halo Studios in 2024, shifting production focus from the proprietary Slipspace Engine used in Infinite to Unreal Engine 5. Campaign Evolved became the first title utilizing this new engine, aiming to introduce the series to fresh audiences with a multiplatform launch — a first for the franchise. The project was previewed in 2024 and officially revealed the subsequent year. Critics responded positively overall, appreciating the enhancements and additions to the original campaign while observing that it did not completely reinvent the experience.
