Metroidvania

God of War Sons of Sparta is a 2026 Metroidvania video game developed by Mega Cat Studios and Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It released worldwide on February 12, 2026, for the PlayStation 5. As the 10th entry in the God of War franchise and the first chronologically, it serves as a prequel to the entire series, taking place before God of War: Ascension (2013) and the flashback sequences in God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010). It marks the first full game in the series to draw loosely from Greek mythology since Ascension, while the previous two installments—God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022)—were rooted in Norse mythology.

The game follows a coming-of-age narrative centered on duty, honor, and brotherhood. Players take control of Kratos during his youth as he undergoes training at the Agoge alongside his younger brother Deimos. After one of their companions goes missing, the brothers journey across Laconia searching for their friend, encountering Greek mythological enemies and a hidden cult threatening Sparta while deepening their connection. The story unfolds through an adult Kratos narrating to his daughter Calliope, who is serving as a captain in the Spartan Army, before revealing the character’s tragic path as shown in the original God of War (2005).

This title represents the second installment in the series to adopt a two-dimensional (2D) action-platformer format, following God of War: Betrayal (2007). It features the same blend of combat, platforming, and puzzle-solving elements found in earlier entries. Because it occurs well before Kratos obtained his signature double-chained blades known as the Blades of Chaos, he instead wields a traditional Spartan spear and shield, augmented with additional tools granting special attacks and magical capabilities. An offline multiplayer option is also included in a roguelite challenge mode; this is only the second time such feature has been added to the series after Ascension. The game also brings back TC Carson as adult Kratos, the original voice actor who previously voiced the role in Ascension; Christopher Judge voiced Kratos in the last two Norse-themed games. Antony Del Rio reprises his role as young Kratos from Ghost of Sparta.

Sons of Sparta received mixed reviews from critics. Appreciation went toward the story and 2D visual design, whereas criticism focused on the weak Metroidvania gameplay mechanics, combat system, and character models. Some reviewers expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of cooperative play in the main game, and criticized the PlayStation Store’s listing for multiplayer access, which initially required finishing the main campaign first to unlock it; developers later fixed this via an update that allowed earlier access. Financially, Sons of Sparta performed well during its launch month in the United States, becoming the 14th best-selling title of February 2026.
