Third-person shooter

Gears of War: E-Day is a 2026 third-person shooter video game developed by The Coalition and People Can Fly and published by Xbox Game Studios. It marks the sixth primary entry in the Gears of War franchise. The game is set fourteen years prior to the first title's events, during Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde broke free from beneath the planet Sera and initiated a brutal surprise assault on humanity. The story centers on war veterans Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they struggle to stay alive during the invasion in the city of Kalona, joined by fellow soldiers Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. Together, they form Bravo Squad amid the breakdown of civilization. The narrative delves into the origins of Marcus and Dom's friendship while showing the fall of Kalona and humanity’s earliest confrontations with the Locust Horde.

Gameplay builds on the series' cover-based combat system, featuring redesigned movement mechanics and improved traversal that provide more freedom and verticality. The campaign supports four-player online cooperative play and two-player split-screen co-op on consoles. Multiplayer modes include 4v4 competitive matches and a new twelve-player cooperative mode named Horde Siege.

The title also features expanded destruction systems, dynamic environmental damage, and heightened gore effects, all created using Unreal Engine 5. Development started after The Coalition shifted to Unreal Engine 5, with the studio aiming to restore the atmosphere, themes, and emotional tone of the original Gears of War—especially the sense of brotherhood, violence, and tragedy tied to Emergence Day. The game launched initially in premium early access on October 1, 2026, before its official release on October 6 for Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

Upon launch, Gears of War: E-Day garnered generally favorable reviews from critics who praised its return to the franchise’s darker themes, emotional depth, visuals, combat, customization, and Horde Siege mode. Some criticism came regarding pacing in semi-open levels, boss encounters, and missing features.
