Action-adventure

The Last of Us Part I is a 2022 action-adventure video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It serves as a remake of the 2013 title The Last of Us, incorporating updated gameplay elements such as improved combat and exploration mechanics along with expanded accessibility features. In this game, players control Joel as he guides the young Ellie through a post-apocalyptic United States while defending her from infected cannibalistic creatures caused by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. This version includes a remake of the 2014 expansion pack, The Last of Us: Left Behind, which focuses on Ellie and her close friend Riley.

The development process was guided by game director Matthew Gallant and creative director Shaun Escayg, replacing original directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann. The project was reworked for modern hardware, requiring new animations, art direction, and character models to match the original team’s intended vision. The team reviewed all cutscenes and narrative segments to understand their core purpose and importance. They used the engine from The Last of Us Part II (2020) as a foundation, enhancing gameplay, technological capabilities, and accessibility options. The game supports audio descriptions, 3D audio, and utilizes haptic feedback and adaptive triggers from the DualSense controller.

The Last of Us Part I launched for PlayStation 5 in September 2022. Critics responded positively to its visual upgrades, facial animations, artificial intelligence, and new accessibility features, though some found the gameplay and level design mixed. Several reviewers questioned whether a remake was needed given its cost. The game earned an award at the Visual Effects Society Awards and received nods at the Game Awards and Golden Joystick Awards. Its Windows release in March 2023 suffered from performance issues and was met with mixed reviews. By March 2024, the game had sold over two million copies.
