Pokémon Scarlet and Violet 2022
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is a 2022 role-playing video game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch. These titles mark the first entries in the ninth generation of the Pokémon video game series. They were announced in February 2022 and launched on 18 November 2022. The games later featured downloadable content (DLC) expansion pass storyline, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. The first part, The Teal Mask, came out on 13 September 2023, followed by the second part, The Indigo Disk, released on 14 December 2023. A post-game expansion, Mochi Mayhem, considered the epilogue to the DLC and the games themselves, was issued on 11 January 2024.
Scarlet and Violet are set in the Paldea Region, inspired by the Iberian Peninsula. In contrast to earlier Pokémon titles, these games offer an open world environment. Players can follow three distinct narratives. Scarlet and Violet introduce 120 new Pokémon, including two regional forms and time-displaced creatures known as Paradox Pokémon. They also feature the Tera Type system, which allows a Pokémon to transform into its exclusive "Tera Type". The titles retain features from recent Pokémon games, such as expansive open areas and overworld Pokémon encounters.
Development of the games started right after the release of their predecessors, Pokémon Sword and Shield. Staff at Game Freak aimed to integrate a new visual style into the project, blending more realistic world design with stylized character models. Animations and models for various Pokémon species were completely reworked to align with this artistic direction.
Scarlet and Violet garnered mixed reviews from critics. While the story received praise, technical issues were noted as drawbacks. The games sold over 10 million copies within their first three days, setting a record as Nintendo's largest launch ever, and surpassed 28 million copies by December 2025. A free update for the games on Nintendo Switch 2, featuring improved visuals, performance enhancements, and other adjustments, was issued on 5 June 2025.
