Forspoken 2023
Forspoken is a 2023 action role-playing game developed by Luminous Productions and published by Square Enix. It features fast and fluid movement across varied terrain, allowing players to freely explore an open world environment. The player controls Frey, a young woman who is transported from New York City to the fantasy realm of Athia, where she must use magic to survive and find her way home. Athia is governed by the oppressive Tantas.
This marks the first game from Luminous Productions, which was formed by former Final Fantasy XV developers. Initially named Project Athia, the title was created to demonstrate the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 through features like ray tracing and procedural generation. The writing team includes Gary Whitta and Amy Hennig, while Black Girl Gamers contributed consultation on Frey's character development. The musical score was composed by Bear McCreary and Garry Schyman.
Forspoken launched on PlayStation 5 and Windows platforms on January 24, 2023. Critics gave the game a mixed reception.
