The Second Round 2024
The Second Round is an English language novel written by Lenrie Peters, a Sierra Leonean-Gambian author and poet. This work is Peters’s sole novel. Originally published in 1965, it was later reprinted in 1966 within the Heinemann African Writers Series. The story follows Dr. Kawa, a Western-educated doctor who returns to Freetown to practice medicine. The narrative is semi-autobiographical in nature.
Critics have noted that the novel addresses post-colonial African concerns, including nationalism, westernization, and challenges of readjusting to Africa after living abroad. It also reflects the social atmosphere of Freetown during that time. The book presents overt Pan-Africanist themes, contrasting the "black world" with Europe. Characters are analyzed through Jungian psychological concepts.
Some reviewers have labeled it "African Gothic," a term introduced by Charles Larson, though Omolara Leslie criticized this classification in Black World. The novel has been compared to Chinua Achebe’s No Longer at Ease and works by fellow Gambian-born Sierra Leonean writer William Conton. Published by Apollo on 1 March 2024, the novel contains 256 pages and falls under the genres of poetry and fiction.
