The Bright Sword 2024
The Bright Sword is a fantasy novel written by American author Lev Grossman, published in 2024 by Viking Press. The story is set within the King Arthur mythology, following Collum, a gifted young knight from a remote region who journeys to Camelot with hopes of meeting King Arthur and becoming part of the Round Table. Upon arriving, Collum discovers that Arthur and most of the Round Table knights had perished weeks earlier during their battle with Mordred. Only a few disoriented knights remain to protect Camelot and Britain’s throne from rival warlords and Morgan le Fay's magical influence.
Grossman spent ten years writing the novel, noting in a blog post that it was an emotionally demanding and complex endeavor due to extensive historical research, sensitive subject matter, and the challenges of writing during the COVID-19 period. In an interview, he explained his interest in reimagining a traditional Arthurian tale by focusing on lesser-known figures rather than iconic heroes such as Gawain or Galahad.
