Memoir

In the Hide: How the Natural World Saved My Life is a 2025 memoir written by Scottish wildlife cameraman, filmmaker and presenter Gordon Buchanan. It was published by Witness Books, an imprint of Ebury Publishing, in February 2025. This represents Buchanan's first book.

The memoir merges memories from Buchanan's youth in Dumbarton and on the Isle of Mull with stories from his professional work filming wildlife across the globe. Together with descriptions of animal encounters and the realities of wildlife filmmaking, it addresses childhood domestic abuse, later struggles with depression, and how time spent in nature has influenced his life.

Buchanan shared with The Observer that reflecting on his early years while crafting this memoir helped him reassess how family domestic violence affected him and the sense of not being good enough that he felt had shaped his professional path.
