Freedom is a 2021 travel memoir written by Sebastian Junger and published by Simon & Schuster. The book follows the journey of two Afghanistan combat veterans, a photojournalist, and war reporter, along with a black dog named Daisy as they walk 400 miles through railway lines in south-central Pennsylvania. In this creative nonfiction work, Junger explores what it means to be free, arguing that modern civilization has not brought safety or contentment to people's lives. He suggests that weakened interpersonal connections have led to increased anxiety, depression, and suicide—particularly in wealthy societies. The themes from Junger’s earlier works reappear throughout, emphasizing the moral and psychological benefits of small nomadic groups or embattled platoons over contemporary capitalism. This book draws on experiences from hikes during the filming of The Last Patrol, which featured US Army Sgt. Brendan O'Byrne, who also appeared in Restrepo, US Army soldier David Roels, and Spanish photo-journalist Guillermo Cervera.
