Nonfiction

Fear and Fury is a 2026 nonfiction book written by Heather Ann Thompson. The book tells the story of the 1984 New York City Subway shooting, which involved a middle-aged white man named Bernie Goetz. Goetz shot four black teenagers on a subway train after one asked for five dollars. Thompson examines this event through the lens of white rage, linking it to Reagan-era politics and current societal views. The book highlights the human stories behind the four teens affected. At the same time as Fear and Fury's publication, the same publishing house released Five Bullets, a legal analysis of the incident by Elliot Williams. Critics responded favorably to Fear and Fury.
