Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan 1999
Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan is a 1999 biography written by Edmund Morris about United States president Ronald Reagan. The book was intended to be the first official biography of a sitting U.S. president, but Morris chose to tell the story through the eyes of a made-up lifelong friend of Reagan. This approach resulted in a work that critics have labeled a semi-biographical novel. Random House published the book, and it quickly sparked debate due to the inclusion of fictional components in what was expected to be a factual account. Reagan and his family had placed trust in Morris to deliver an accurate record.
The narrator of Dutch is named Edmund Morris, although he has no real connection to the author. The book also includes invented figures such as the narrator's fictional wife, son, and a gossip columnist whose non-existent letters are cited throughout. Morris conducted interviews with Reagan over thirteen years and received special access to the White House and Reagan’s administration. However, he found the available information inadequate, leading him to craft a semi-fictional narrative instead of a traditional biography.
