Gag Reflex 2022
Gag Reflex is a 2022 novella written by British-American author Elle Nash that draws from her personal struggle with an eating disorder. The work serves as a spiritual predecessor to Nash's earlier novel Animals Eat Each Other, continuing exploration of teenage development and psychosexual topics. This novella uses an unconventional layout based on online communications. In traditional media formats, the story includes visual elements described only by their file names.
Nash stated that creating this novella proved difficult yet meaningful, allowing her to transform past pain into creative expression. The narrative begins with two quotations from Frankenstein, reflecting how eating disorders can cause separation between physical self, identity, and rejection of one's body. The nu metal track "Blood Pigs" by Otep appears frequently throughout the text due to its connection with sexual abuse themes.
