Fiction

Elizabeth Finch is an English-language fiction novel written by Julian Barnes and published by Jonathan Cape in 2022. The book contains 14th works published under Barnes's own name, and it was released in the United Kingdom on 14 April 2022. The story follows a character named Finch who is pursued by newspapers after delivering a lecture at the London Review of Books. Some reviewers found the depiction of British tabloid interest in academia unlikely. Barnes responded by referencing the case of historical novelist Hilary Mantel, who was heavily criticized after speaking about the British royal family at the British Museum in 2013 and later writing about it for the London Review of Books. Mantel died later that year. The novel’s central figure is based on Barnes's friend Anita Brookner. This work is categorized as a roman à clef.
