Demon Copperhead 2022
Demon Copperhead is a 2022 novel written by Barbara Kingsolver. It received the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction along with another work, and also won the 2023 Women's Prize for Fiction. Kingsolver drew inspiration from Charles Dickens's David Copperfield. Although both stories follow boys growing up in difficult circumstances, Demon Copperhead takes place in Appalachia and addresses modern concerns. The novel examines social and economic divisions in the region, child poverty in rural America, and drug addiction, particularly focusing on the opioid epidemic.
