Pour une poignée d'ivoire 2023
For a Fistful of Ivory is an autobiographical account written by Jean-Claude Vignoli detailing his efforts combating wildlife trafficking in Africa. The book was published in February 2023 by Éditions Favre.
It outlines his involvement with the NGO EAGLE in dismantling a criminal network based in Ivory Coast during 2018, which led to the conviction of a well-known Vietnamese trafficker sentenced to 1.5 years in prison. The ivory was concealed within hollow wooden planks and transported via sea routes to European and Asian markets. Vignoli recounts both the physical risks he encountered while pursuing the smugglers and the mental strain of adopting criminal tactics to neutralize them.
He emphasizes the destruction of African megafauna like elephants due to financial gain, citing that a kilo of rhinoceros horn can fetch up to $100,000.. According to him, excessive consumer demand in modern societies plays a major role in the decline of wildlife.
