Deliver Me 2023
Deliver Me is a 2023 novel written by British-American author Elle Nash. The book explores themes of motherhood within capitalist systems, societal attitudes toward pregnancy, the objectification of women as reproductive beings, and mental health struggles. Nash mentions that she spent two weeks outlining the novel and eleven weeks completing the initial draft.
Nash credits her experiences living in the American south, particularly northern Arkansas, as influential to the work's creation. She specifically references a 2015 crime involving Dynel Lane, which occurred while she was residing in Colorado. Dynel Lane assaulted a 7-month-pregnant woman named Michelle Wilkins, removed her fetus, and later pretended to be pregnant for nine months. Nash also draws upon the case of Lisa Montgomery, who killed and removed the fetus from a 8-month-pregnant woman named Bobbie Stinnett. Additionally, Nash references her own personal experience of working during her pregnancy.
The novel is divided into three sections, corresponding to the first, second, and third trimesters, with an accompanying image of a growing fetus that gradually decreases in size. After finishing early drafts, Nash compiled a music playlist consisting of 35 tracks to accompany the book.
