The Empress 2022
A German historical drama series, The Empress, follows the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Devrim Lingnau portrays the empress while Philip Froissant plays Franz Joseph I of Austria. The show debuted on Netflix in 29 September 2022 and quickly gained popularity, becoming the network's second-most viewed series globally for two weeks and ranking seventh among non-English series in 2022 with over 150 million hours consumed.
8 November 2022 saw Netflix extend the series to a second season, which launched on 22 November 2024. A companion book titled The Empress: A Novel was commissioned from Gigi Griffis shortly before the streaming premiere. The novel released two days prior to the show's debut on the platform. 27 January 2025 brought about a third and final season renewal, scheduled for release on 12 November 2026.
