Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2022
A 2026 American science fiction television series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered on Paramount+ in 2022 as part of Kurtzman's expanded Star Trek Universe. It is the 11th Star Trek series and was developed by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. The show originates from Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024) and follows Captain Christopher Pike, Spock, and Number One aboard the Enterprise during the 23rd century, specifically in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series (1966–1969).
Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn portray Pike, Spock, and Number One respectively. These actors were originally cast for the second season of Discovery (2019) and their reception led to a desire to bring them back for a spin-off. Development started by March 2020, with Strange New Worlds officially ordered in May. The lead cast and creative team were confirmed, including Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers as showrunners. Additional stars include Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Martin Quinn. Some of these actors portray younger versions of characters from The Original Series.
The series is produced by CBS Studios in partnership with Secret Hideout, Weed Road Pictures, H M R X Productions, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Filming occurred at CBS Stages Canada in Mississauga, Ontario. Showrunners opted for episodic storytelling similar to The Original Series rather than the serialized format used by Discovery.
The premiere took place on Paramount+ in May 5, 2022, with its ten-episode first season released weekly until July. Season two was released from June to August 2023; season three, from July to September 2025; and season four, from July to September 2026. A fifth and final season, featuring a six-episode order, is currently in production. Estimated viewership and audience demand are high for the series. It received positive reviews for its episodic structure and acting, earning two Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award nominations and two Saturn Award wins.
