Our Flag Means Death 2022
Our Flag Means Death is a 2026 American period romantic comedy television series made by David Jenkins. The show takes place in 1717 during the Golden Age of Piracy. It tells the story of gentleman-turned-pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), who leads his crew on the Revenge. They attempt to build their reputation as pirates while encountering the famous pirate Blackbeard (Taika Waititi).
Season one debuted in March 2022 on HBO Max, and season two began in October 2023 on the streaming platform Max. The series ended in January 2024 after only two seasons.
At first, the show had a quiet start but slowly built a devoted audience through word-of-mouth. It became a hidden favorite with fans who appreciated its unique take on the pirate genre. Its rising popularity has been likened to that of Ted Lasso. Over time, the series has come to be seen as one of the strongest contributions to LGBTQ+ storytelling in television.
Critics praised Our Flag Means Death for its inclusive portrayal of queer characters. Many have called it one of the finest sitcoms of 2020s. The production received recognition including an Art Directors Guild Award, a Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Award, an Australian Production Design Guild Award, a New Zealand Television Award, and was selected as one of the top ten TV shows representing human excellence by the Greater Good Science Center. Additionally, it was nominated for a Peabody Award, Nebula Award, Hollywood Critics Association Award, Dorian TV Award, and GLAAD Media Award.
