Obi-Wan Kenobi, also titled Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, is a space opera television miniseries made by Lucasfilm for the streaming platform Disney+. It is part of the Star Wars universe. The story takes place ten years after the destruction of the Jedi Order in the movie Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005). In this series, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi comes out of hiding to save Princess Leia Organa from Imperial Inquisitors. This puts him at odds with his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker, who has now become a Sith named Darth Vader.
Ewan McGregor plays the main character, returning to his role from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Supporting actors including Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Jimmy Smits, Hayden Christensen (who portrays Vader), and Ian McDiarmid reprise their roles from those films. Vivien Lyra Blair appears as a young Leia Organa for the first time. Originally, the project was intended to be a spin-off movie written by Hossein Amini and directed by Stephen Daldry. However, after the box office disappointment of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), it was transformed into a limited series. McGregor confirmed his participation in the miniseries in August 2019, and Deborah Chow was named director for all episodes about a month later. Production was set to begin in July 2020, but it was paused in January 2020 due to Lucasfilm dissatisfaction with the scripts. Joby Harold stepped in to rewrite the series and became showrunner in April 2020, working alongside Chow, McGregor, Kathleen Kennedy, and Michelle Rejwan as executive producers. Further casting happened in March 2021. Principal photography started by that May in Los Angeles, using StageCraft video wall technology, and wrapped by September. Natalie Holt created the soundtrack, while John Williams composed a new theme for Kenobi that William Ross arranged for various scenes.
The miniseries debuted on May 27, 2022, releasing its first two episodes. The remaining four episodes were released weekly until June 22. Critics responded positively overall, appreciating McGregor's acting, action scenes, John Williams’s new main theme, the character-focused plot, and the emotional tone. Some criticism was directed at the writing. It earned several awards, including Best Limited Event Series for Streaming and Best Guest Starring Role on Television (for Christensen) at the 47th Saturn Awards, as well as a nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.
