House of the Dragon is a 2022 American fantasy drama television series developed by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. This prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019) marks the second television production in the Game of Thrones universe. Drawing from elements of Martin's 2018 publication Fire & Blood, the series starts approximately 100 years after the unification of the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule, placing it nearly 200 years before the events depicted in Game of Thrones and 172 years prior to Daenerys Targaryen's birth. The show features a large ensemble cast and depicts the downfall of House Targaryen through a brutal civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons".

The series was ordered for a full season in October 2019, with Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik appointed as showrunners. It debuted on August 21, 2022, launching its first season with ten episodes. Within five days of its debut, the show was renewed for a second season. After the first season, Sapochnik exited as showrunner, leaving Condal to lead the production alone for season two. The second season launched on June 16, 2024 and contained eight episodes. A third season was confirmed in June 2024, premiering on June 21, 2026 with eight episodes. Plans are underway for a fourth and final season expected to air in 2028.

On its premiere day, House of the Dragon attracted more than 10 million viewers across linear networks and HBO million on Max, marking the largest debut in HBO's history. The series has garnered favorable reviews. It was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama, while Emma D'Arcy received two nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama. It also earned nine Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and took home three British Academy Television Craft Awards.
