Heartstopper 2022
Heartstopper is a British coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama television series created and written by Alice Oseman for Netflix, based on her webcomic and graphic novel series of the same name. The show stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke as Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, depicting their journey from friendship to romance while attending Truham Grammar School. The ensemble cast features William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Jenny Walser, Rhea Norwood, Leila Khan, Sebastian Croft, Cormac Hyde-Corrin and Olivia Colman. As the characters mature, the series explores themes such as sexuality, gender identity, mental health, intimacy, and life in early adulthood.
See-Saw Films produced Heartstopper after acquiring the screen rights in 2019. Oseman authored all episodes. Euros Lyn directed the first two seasons, while Andy Newbery took over for the third. A total of three series, each containing eight episodes, were released between 2022 and 2024; the initial season premiered on 22 April 2022, followed by the second on 3 August 2023 and the third on 3 October 2024. In April 2025, Netflix announced that the television adaptation would end with a feature-length film titled Heartstopper Forever, which premiered on 17 July 2026.
Critics praised the series, especially Oseman’s writing, the acting by Connor and Locke, loyalty to the original material, and its uplifting representation of LGBTQ+ youth. The show earned the Children's and Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Young Teen Series, with Connor, Locke, and Oseman each winning individual awards for their contributions. Heartstopper also received recognition from the GLAAD Media Awards for exceptional kids and family programming, along with honors from BAFTA Cymru, the Royal Television Society, the Dorian Awards, the Kidscreen Awards, and the MTV Movie & TV Awards.
Shortly after its release, Heartstopper entered Netflix's Global Top 10, contributing to increased sales of Oseman’s books and enhancing streaming numbers and chart presence for soundtrack tracks. Critics noted that the series reflects a broader trend toward more optimistic LGBTQ+ storytelling, with Nick's bisexual storyline being widely recognized as a significant instance of authentic bisexual visibility in media.
