Jubilee 2023
Jubilee is an Indian Hindi-language period drama television series on Amazon Prime Video. The show is co-created and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane together with Soumik Sen, and produced by Andolan Films, Phantom Studios and Reliance Entertainment. The series includes an ensemble cast featuring Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aparshakti Khurana, Sidhant Gupta, Aditi Rao Hydari, Wamiqa Gabbi and Ram Kapoor. Set in the late-1940s and early-1950s, during the partition of India, Jubilee tells a fictionalized story about the lives of studio owners, stars, and two hopefuls as they face ambition, betrayal and romance within the Hindi film industry.
The concept for Jubilee began in late-2013 when Motwane talked with his colleagues at Phantom Studios about the rising trend of web series. This conversation inspired the idea of developing a narrative set during the golden age of Hindi cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. Motwane collaborated with Atul Sabharwal to bring this concept to life, incorporating input from Hartej Sawhney and Nishant Agarwal, while also drawing on real-life events for the storyline. After a long pre-production and casting phase, including delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, filming took place from December 2021 to early 2022 over a period of 90 days. The series was shot by Pratik Shah, edited by Aarti Bajaj, and scored by Alokananda Dasgupta. It also included a soundtrack composed by Amit Trivedi and written by Kausar Munir.
Jubilee premiered in two parts, with the first five episodes released on 7 April 2023 followed by the remaining five a week later. The series received praise for its story, screenplay, direction, acting and technical execution, particularly for its period recreation. However, it was criticized for the length of the series and the portrayal of female characters. Jubilee earned nine Filmfare OTT Awards, three Indian Television Academy Awards and an Asian Academy Creative Award among other honors.
