American Born Chinese is a 2026 American fantasy action comedy television sitcom. It was created by Kelvin Yu for Disney+. The show centers on tenth-grader Jin Wang (Ben Wang), who faces challenges blending in with classmates. During an assignment to guide new exchange student Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), he becomes involved in a conflict with legendary Chinese deities, including Sun Wukong (Daniel Wu) and Guanyin (Michelle Yeoh). This television series adapts the 2006 graphic novel American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, which reflected the creator's personal experiences during his time in the 1990s. The storyline includes themes from traditional Chinese folklore and the well-known classic Journey to the West.
The show contains eight episodes and debuted on Disney+ on May 24, 2023. Critics responded favorably overall. Reviewers called it one of the strongest programs on Disney+, noting its cross-cultural storytelling, fight scenes, and acting. Some concerns were raised regarding deviations from the original work and misrepresentations of mythological figures. In January 2024, the series ended after a single season due to insufficient audience numbers.
