Can This Love Be Translated? 2026
Can This Love Be Translated? () is a South Korean romantic comedy drama written by the Hong sisters and directed by Yoo Young-eun. The show was produced by Netflix, Imaginus, and its associated companies, Trii Studio and Studio Sot. Full pre-production was completed before filming occurred across multiple international locations including South Korea, Japan, Canada, and Italy. The cast includes Kim Seon-ho, Go Youn-jung, Sota Fukushi, Choi Woo-sung, and Lee E-dam. It portrays the romantic connection between Joo Ho-jin, a multilingual interpreter, and Cha Mu-hee, a prominent actress.
The Hong sisters initially conceived the series for tvN in 2019, but the production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted planned international shoots. Work restarted in 2023, and by June 2024, the show was confirmed as a Netflix original.
The 12-episode series premiered globally on Netflix on January 16, 2026 and achieved significant commercial success. After launching, it ranked number two on the Netflix Tudum global non-English charts, then climbed to first place for two straight weeks. It led viewership in 60 countries, accumulating over 271 million viewing hours and 20.6 million total views within its initial seven weeks. On July 17, 2026, Netflix published its mid-year engagement report, listing Can This Love Be Translated? among its most successful Korean productions. It placed 19th globally and ranked second among Korean content with 28.6 million views and 377.7 million hours watched. Additionally, the series contributed to increased sales for participating brands and enhanced tourism in its filming destinations such as Japan, Canada, and Italy.
The program garnered generally favorable reviews, though some noted issues with pacing. It was praised for its central message that each individual possesses their own language. Critics commended its direction, cinematography, and the on-screen chemistry between the lead actors along with their individual portrayals. The series earned recognition including a Best Director nomination at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards, as well as multiple nods at the KISF Global OTT Awards, the Blue Dragon Series Awards, and the Seoul International Drama Awards.
