High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special 2020
A musical television special titled High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special was made for Disney+ and handled by Tim Federle in writing, producing and directing roles. Based on the High School Musical movie franchise, it included cast members Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett and Sofia Wylie along with others, singing holiday songs. A preview of the second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was also shown, which debuted in May 2021.
Because filming for the second season stopped because of the COVID-19 outbreak, Federle talked about making a Christmas production with the actors. Drawing from reality TV music and dance shows, Federle aimed to show the real personalities of the cast rather than their characters from the series. The special was shot during pandemic times under strict rules, with Federle overseeing from afar across several locations.
It premiered on December 11, 2020, accompanied by a soundtrack including acoustic versions of two songs originally created for the second season's release, which came out three weeks earlier.
