Yellowjackets 2021
Yellowjackets is an American thriller drama television series crafted by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson for Showtime. The show presents two interwoven narratives: one centers on a group of teenagers trying to endure the wilderness following a plane crash in 1996, and the other unfolds 25 years later as the survivors endeavor to rebuild their lives. The main cast includes Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Samantha Hanratty portraying the teenage characters, with Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci playing their adult versions.
The inspiration for the show originated from the Andes flight disaster and the Donner Party. Lyle and Nickerson aimed to examine both the best and worst aspects of human nature, drawing on themes of social dynamics, assumptions about behavior, and how traumatic experiences affect people over time. They pitched their concept to more than a dozen networks and secured offers from five. Several studios turned it down because of its dark tone involving young characters and lack of an existing intellectual property. Showtime secured the rights in May 2018. The initial season launched on November 14, 2021, followed by the second season on March 26, 2023. Due to the 2023 Hollywood labor conflicts, production for the third season was suspended and later resumed on February 16, 2025. In May 2025, the series was ordered for a fourth and final season, scheduled to debut on November 20, 2026 exclusively on Paramount+ Premium.
Critics have praised Yellowjackets for its acting, mystery aspects, and dual timeline storytelling. It has earned 10 Primetime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods for Lynskey and Ricci; three Writers Guild of America Award nods; five Television Critics Association Award submissions; a Peabody Award nomination; and a Critics' Choice Award. Yellowjackets ranks as the second most-watched series in Showtime history, with its third season achieving the highest ratings in the show's run.
