Navarasa 2021
Navarasa is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language anthology television series that was developed by Mani Ratnam, who also worked with Jayendra Panchapakesan to produce it via their new production company Justickets. The show consists of nine individual episodes rooted in the traditional Indian concept of Navarasas, each directed by Priyadarshan, Karthik Subbaraj, Vasanth, Arvind Swami, Bejoy Nambiar, Karthick Naren, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Sarjun KM and Rathindran R. Prasad. It includes an ensemble cast featuring Suriya, Revathi, Vijay Sethupathi, Siddharth, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Prayaga Martin, Arvind Swamy, Prasanna, Poorna, Delhi Ganesh, Rohini, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Yogi Babu, Manikuttan, Remya Nambeesan, Aditi Balan, Bobby Simha, Riythvika, Sree Raam, Atharvaa, Nedumudi Venu, Anjali and Kishore, among others.
The idea for the series emerged when Mani Ratnam and Jayendra were involved in social initiatives, aiming to create a streaming project that would raise money for daily-wage workers and other members of the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. This marked the digital debut for Mani Ratnam and the production studio Madras Talkies, with Justickets partnering with FEFSI and Bhoomika Trust to organize fundraising efforts. Following an official announcement in October 2020 made by the cast and crew—including directors, writers, composers, cinematographers, and editors—production on the short film-episodes started during that same month and wrapped up by March 2021. Three films initially proposed by directors Halitha Shameem, Ponram, and K. V. Anand were eventually removed from production.
Navarasa was highly anticipated as a Tamil streaming endeavor due to its star-studded cast, technical crew, and direction, along with extensive promotional campaigns. The series premiered on 6 August 2021 through Netflix.
