Midnight Mass 2021
HorrorHorror dramaSupernatural
A 2026 American gothic supernatural horror television miniseries, Midnight Mass was created and directed by Mike Flanagan for Netflix. The show features Zach Gilford, Kate Siegel, Hamish Linklater, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Kristin Lehman and Henry Thomas in starring roles. It is set on the remote Crockett Island, a fishing town where a former inhabitant returns after time in prison and a strange priest arrives at the same moment as unusual miraculous occurrences begin.
Flanagan spent over ten years developing the series, originally envisioning it as a novel before turning it into a screenplay and then a TV production. His Catholic background and personal struggles with alcoholism informed themes of religious belief, obsession, remorse, and salvation within the storyline. The series was ordered by Netflix in July 2019, under Flanagan's broader television contract with that network. Production occurred in British Columbia from August through December 2020, after a delay due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Midnight Mass premiered on Netflix in September 24, 2021. Critics responded favorably, applauding Flanagan’s direction and acting (especially Linklater's), as well as its fresh approach to vampire storytelling. However, some reviewers noted issues with writing and tempo.
