It's a Sin 2021
It's a Sin is a British drama series written by Russell T Davies. The show takes place in London from 1981 through 1991, portraying the experiences of gay men and their companions during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the UK. The main cast includes Olly Alexander, Omari Douglas, Callum Scott Howells, Lydia West, and Nathaniel Curtis. Additional actors in the series are David Carlyle, Keeley Hawes, Shaun Dooley, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Neil Patrick Harris, and Stephen Fry. Directed by Peter Hoar, the production was handled by Red Production Company and aired in the UK on Channel 4 of 22 January 2021.
The content of the series proved challenging for broadcasters to accept. BBC One and ITV both declined to air it. However, Channel 4 agreed to take the show after drama commissioning editor Lee Mason advocated strongly for it, resulting in a reduction from an intended eight episodes down to five. Principal filming began on 7 October 2019. Although set in London, most of the filming occurred in Manchester, with supplementary scenes shot in Liverpool, Bolton, Eccles, Bangor, and Rhos-on-Sea. Executive producers were Davies, Hoar, and Nicola Shindler, while Phil Collinson acted as producer.
Critics praised the series for its emotional storytelling, writing quality, acting performances, and realistic portrayal of HIV/AIDS. Each episode was made available on Channel 4's streaming platform All 4 (which later became known as Channel 4). Viewers watched the entire series more than 6.5 million times, making it the most binge-watched program on that service. The premiere episode also marked Channel 4's largest debut for a drama. Additionally, the release sparked a spike in HIV testing within weeks of its broadcast. At the 2022 British Academy Television Awards, It's a Sin received twelve nominations, including Best Mini-Series and winning Best Director: Fiction for Peter Hoar.
