Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty is a 2026 American sports drama series that aired on HBO. It was created by Max Borenstein and Jim Hecht, and adapted from the book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman. The first season contains 10 episodes and follows the 1980s Showtime era of the Los Angeles Lakers, beginning in late 1979. This period featured stars like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The show includes an ensemble cast with John C. Reilly, Jason Clarke, Jason Segel, Gaby Hoffmann, Rob Morgan, and Adrien Brody. It debuted on March 6, 2022, with the pilot directed by Adam McKay. The series was renewed for a second season in April 2022 and returned on August 6, 2023. On September 17, 2023, the show was canceled after two seasons. Although HBO has stated the series is dramatized, it faced criticism from former NBA players and historians who claimed it contained major factual errors. Some individuals from that era said the portrayal of events and personalities was incorrect, including how Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Spencer Haywood interacted and how Jerry West was presented.
