Adventure horrorScience fantasySupernatural horror
A 2023 supernatural horror film, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, also titled Dracula: Voyage of the Demeter in certain international markets, was directed by André Øvredal and written by Bragi F. Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz. Based on "The Captain's Log," a chapter from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, the movie features Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian in key roles. The story centers on the crew of the merchant vessel Demeter, who face a deadly journey from Transylvania to London while pursued by the legendary vampire Dracula, portrayed by Javier Botet.
Work on adapting "The Captain's Log" started when Schut wrote an early version of the script after meeting a colleague involved in the 1992 Bram Stoker’s Dracula film. However, it remained unproduced for over twenty years. Amblin Partners secured the rights in October 2019, leading to Øvredal being named as director. Casting was finalized in 2021. Principal filming commenced on June 30, 2021 in Berlin, continued in Malta, and wrapped on October 1. Additional scenes were shot in the historic fortress city of Mdina.
Original composer Thomas Newman was hired to create the soundtrack but was replaced by Bear McCreary due to scheduling issues. The film premiered in U.S. theaters on August 11, 2023 under Universal Pictures. Critics gave it mixed reviews and the movie failed at the box office, earning $22 million against a $45 million budget.
