The Flash 2023
FantasyScience fiction actionSuperhero
A 2023 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Barry Allen / The Flash is titled The Flash. It was directed by Andy Muschietti and features a screenplay written by Christina Hodson, with the story credited to John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold. This production marks the 13th entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Ezra Miller portrays Barry Allen, who journeys through time to stop his mother's death and ends up trapped in an alternate timeline. Sasha Calle makes her film debut alongside Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton. The movie was produced by Barbara Muschietti and Michael Disco for DC Films and Warner Bros. Pictures.
The project’s development started in the late 1980s, with several versions considered before being restructured for the DCEU in 2014, when Miller joined the cast. Over the years, multiple writers and directors were involved, including Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, Daley, and Goldstein, all of whom left due to disagreements with studio executives. Muschietti and Hodson took over in July 2019, and pre-production commenced in January 2020. The story draws inspiration from the 2011 comic Flashpoint, incorporating multiverse concepts and featuring DC characters like Calle’s Supergirl and several portrayals of Batman, particularly Keaton’s versions from Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), with others digitally added. Principal photography took place from April to October 2021 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and in locations across the United Kingdom.
The Flash had its premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on June 12, 2023, and opened in the U.S. on June 16 after being delayed by director changes and the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics gave it mixed reviews, appreciating the humor, action scenes, and acting, while criticizing visual effects and the final act. Box office results were poor, earning $271.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $200–220 million. Factors contributing to its failure included Miller's legal problems and public controversy, the upcoming DCEU reboot with the DC Universe (DCU), general superhero fatigue, and the film’s lackluster marketing and critical response.
