Directed and produced by Gareth Edwards, with co-writing credits shared with Chris Weitz, the film features a cast including John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney.

Development commenced in November 2019 when Edwards committed to directing and scripting the project for New Regency, officially announced in February 2020. Actor Washington was cast in May 2021, with additional cast members joining throughout the following year. Principal photography started in January 2022 in Thailand, with an $80 million budget. The film was released in North America on September 29, 2023 by 20th Century Studios. It earned $104.3 million globally and garnered favorable critical reception. At the 96th Academy Awards, it received two nominations, for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound. Additionally, the film was nominated for Best Science Fiction Film and Best Film Visual / Special Effects at the 51st Saturn Awards.
