BiographicalHistorical dramaWar drama

A 2023 epic historical war film, Napoleon follows the life of the famous French leader, focusing on his ascent to power and his marriage to Joséphine. The movie was directed and co-produced by Ridley Scott, with screenplay written by David Scarpa. Joaquin Phoenix portrays Napoleon while Vanessa Kirby plays Joséphine.

Scott announced Napoleon as his upcoming project in October 2020. After setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, including changes in cast, principal photography commenced in February 2022 in England and continued for multiple months. Besides David Scarpa, regular collaborators such as cinematographer Dariusz Wolski and editor Claire Simpson were involved in the production.

The film had its premiere at Salle Pleyel in Paris on November 14, 2023. It opened in the U.S. and UK on November 22 through Columbia Pictures, distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, before debuting on Apple TV+ on March 1, 2024. Worldwide earnings reached $222.4million, marking a box office failure despite modest success abroad. Critics offered mixed feedback, commending battle scenes and acting while faulting tone, rhythm, and factual accuracy.

At the 96th Academy Awards, Napoleon earned nods for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Visual Effects.
