Mystery thriller

A 2023 American screenlife mystery thriller film, Missing was written and directed by Will Merrick and Nick Johnson in their feature directorial debuts, based on a story by Sev Ohanian and Aneesh Chaganty, who also produced the film with Natalie Qasabian. The movie exists as a standalone entry within the universe of Searching (2018). Starring Storm Reid, Joaquim de Almeida, Ken Leung, Amy Landecker, Daniel Henney, and Nia Long, it tells the story of June Allen, a teenager attempting to locate her vanished mother after she disappears during a trip to Colombia with her new boyfriend.

In 2019, an anthology sequel to Searching was announced, with Merrick and Johnson, who edited the original film, committing to direct their first feature films in January 2021. Reid and Long were cast in the spring of 2021, and principal photography occurred in Los Angeles between March and May of that year, following delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Missing also functions as a spiritual sequel to Run (2020), which was directed by Searching’s Chaganty and edited by Merrick and Johnson, thereby resolving storylines from that movie.

The film premiered theatrically in the United States on January 20, 2023 through Sony Pictures Releasing under their Screen Gems banner. Critics responded favorably to the movie, and it earned $48 million at the box office.
