Killers of the Flower Moon 2023
Biographical dramaCrime dramaWestern
A 2023 American epic crime drama film, Killers of the Flower Moon was directed by Martin Scorsese and co-written by Eric Roth based on a 2017 nonfiction book. The movie features Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons. It is set in 1920s Oklahoma and follows a series of murders targeting members of the Osage Nation after oil was found on tribal land. While the tribe held mineral rights to their reservation, a corrupt local political figure tried to seize that wealth. This marks the sixth feature film collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio, the tenth between Scorsese and De Niro, and the eleventh and final with composer Robbie Robertson, who passed away two months prior to the film's release and for whom the movie is dedicated.
The project began development in March 2016 after Imperative Entertainment acquired the rights to adapt the book. Scorsese and DiCaprio joined the production in 2017, with plans to start filming in early 2018. The shoot was delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eventually, production was scheduled to begin in February 2021, with Apple Studios confirmed as financier and distributor alongside Paramount Pictures. Principal photography took place from April through October 2021 in Osage and Washington counties, Oklahoma. With a $200–215 million budget, it was the largest ever spent on a film shoot in Oklahoma and ended up being a box-office flop with a total gross of $158.8 million.
The film had its premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2023. It was released in the United States on October 20 by Paramount Pictures, followed by streaming on Apple TV+ in January 2024. Critics responded positively to the release. The movie earned Best Film at the National Board of Review and was listed among the top-ten films of 2023 by the American Film Institute. It received nominations for ten Academy Awards—including Best Picture—seven Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture), nine British Academy Film Awards (including Best Film), and three SAG Awards. Gladstone won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
