Action adventure

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a 2023 American action-adventure film directed by James Mangold and written by Mangold, David Koepp, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth. It is the fifth and final entry in the Indiana Jones movie series, following Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Harrison Ford, Karen Allen and John Rhys-Davies return to their roles from earlier films, while Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen are added to the cast. The story is set in 1969 and centers on Jones and his estranged goddaughter Helena as they seek a powerful artifact before Dr. Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi now working for NASA, who intends to use it to change World War II's results.

The idea of making a fifth Indiana Jones film was first discussed in 1979, when Paramount Pictures agreed to produce five films in the series. George Lucas began exploring concepts for the next movie in 2008, and Koepp was hired as screenwriter in 2016. However, Jonathan Kasdan replaced Koepp in 2018 before leaving the project. Originally scheduled for release in 2019, production was delayed by rewrites and the global 19 pandemic. Steven Spielberg had been attached to direct but left the project in 2020, with Mangold stepping in as director. Principal photography started in June 2021, filming taking place across the United Kingdom, Italy, and Morocco, wrapping up in February 2022.

The musical score was composed by John Williams, who also received nominations for Best Original Score at the 96th Academy Awards and Best Score at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. Williams won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition for "Helena's Theme". The film premiered out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 30 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Critics gave it mixed reviews, but the movie failed at the box office, grossing $384million, making it one of the most expensive films ever produced.
