Coming-of-ageScience fiction actionSuperhero

A 2023 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle is titled Blue Beetle. It is directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, making it the 14th entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Xolo Maridueña plays the role of Reyes, a recent college graduate who gains superpowers after coming into contact with an ancient alien artifact called the Scarab. Supporting cast members include Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. The production was handled by John Rickard and Zev Foreman for DC Films and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Development of this version featuring Jaime Reyes started by the end of November 2018, with Dunnet-Alcocer signed on as screenwriter. Soto was chosen to direct the project in February 2021 for HBO Max. Maridueña joined the cast in August, prompting a shift from streaming to theatrical release scheduled for December. Additional casting occurred in early 2022. Principal photography ran from late May through mid-July at Wilder Studios in Decatur, Georgia, as well as locations in El Paso, Texas, and Puerto Rico. This movie marks the first live-action superhero film with a Latino protagonist.

The premiere took place in El Paso on August 14, 2023, followed by a nationwide release in the United States on August 18. Critics gave the film generally positive feedback and it became the most-watched title on HBO Max in the country. However, its financial success was limited, earning $130.8 million globally compared to a production cost ranging between $104 and 125 million dollars. This made it the least profitable film within the DCEU. Factors contributing to poor box office results included the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes, upcoming changes to the franchise with the new DC Universe (DCU), and Hurricane Hilary. A follow-up animated television series set in the DCU is currently in development, and Maridueña will return for the 2027 DCU film Man of Tomorrow.
