Barbie 2023
Adventure comedyFantasy adventureSatirical
A 2023 satirical fantasy comedy film, Barbie was directed by Greta Gerwig and written by her alongside her husband, Noah Baumbach. It is based on the fashion dolls created by Mattel and marks the first live-action adaptation of the brand following many animated movies and TV specials. The film stars Margot Robbie in the role of the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Their story follows a journey of self-discovery through Barbieland and into the real world after experiencing an existential crisis.
Supporting roles are played by America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. Universal Pictures announced the live-action adaptation in September 2009 with Laurence Mark serving as producer. The project started development in April 2014 when Sony Pictures obtained the rights. Multiple changes occurred in both writing and directing roles, including initial casting of Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway as Barbie. In Warner Bros. Pictures, the rights were transferred to October 2018. Robbie was cast in 2019, and Gerwig was named director and co-writer with Baumbach in 2020. The rest of the main cast was revealed early in 2022.
Principal filming took place mainly at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England and the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles from March through July 2022. The film had its premiere at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023 and opened in the United States on July 21. Its simultaneous release with Universal’s Oppenheimer sparked the "Barbenheimer" trend, encouraging moviegoers to watch both films together. It earned $1.448billion, becoming Warner Bros.’ top-grossing film, the highest-grossing film of 2023, and the 14th highest-earning film in history at that time.
Barbie was named one of the top ten films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. It received strong critical praise along with multiple awards, including eight Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture), winning Best Original Song for "What Was I Made For?". That song also won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, while the film received the inaugural Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
