Clayface 2026
Horror thrillerPsychological thrillerScience fiction horror
A 2026 American body horror psychological thriller film, Clayface is based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The movie is the third in the DC Universe (DCU) and was directed by James Watkins, with a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen / Clayface, joined by Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan. The plot follows Hagen, who after being disfigured by a mobster named Dencik, seeks out a scientist named Ackie. Ackie transforms his body into clay to restore his appearance. As he pursues revenge, Hagen starts to lose his grip on reality and struggles to recognize himself.
The film was produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn, and Peter Safran of DC Studios. After publicly expressing interest in a Clayface movie, Flanagan pitched the idea to the newly created DC Studios in March 2023. The project and Flanagan’s involvement were confirmed in December 2024 as part of the DCU, which replaced the DCEU. Due to scheduling conflicts, Flanagan could not direct the film. Watkins was brought on board in February 2025, Amini rewrote the script by May, and Rhys Harries was cast in June. Additional casting occurred over the following months.
Principal photography began at the end of August and wrapped at the start of November 2025. Locations included Liverpool and Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England. The film had its premiere at the Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles on October 13, 2026, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 23, 2026. It is part of DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Worldwide box office earnings reached $46.5 million.
