The Fate of the Furious 2017
A 2017 American action film, The Fate of the Furious follows the eighth entry in the Fast & Furious series. It was directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Chris Morgan. This movie continues the story from Furious 7, released in 2015. The main cast includes Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, along with Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. In the plot, Dom lives a quiet life with his wife Letty Ortiz. However, cyberterrorist Cipher, played by Theron, manipulates him into joining her cause, leading him to betray his crew. As a result, the team must reunite to rescue Dom and stop Cipher.
Planning for this eighth movie started as early as 2014. By March 2015, it was announced that the film would be based in New York City. Production preparations began shortly after the release of Furious 7, with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker's co-star, and producer Neal H. Moritz agreeing to return. An initial release date was set for the same month, followed by casting between April and June. In October, it was confirmed that Gray would take over direction, replacing James Wan who had directed the last film. Music composer Brian Tyler, who previously scored the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh installments, returned to compose the soundtrack.
Principal photography commenced in March 2016 across various international locations including Mývatn, Havana, Atlanta, Cleveland, and New York City, continuing the franchise’s global filming tradition. With an estimated production budget reaching up to $270 million, it ranks among the most costly movies ever produced. This marks the first time since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) that Paul Walker does not appear as Brian O’Conner, following his passing in November 2013.
The Fate of the Furious held its premiere in Berlin on April 4, 2017 and opened in U.S. theaters on April 14 through Universal Pictures. Critics gave it mixed-to-positive reviews, highlighting the acting and action scenes but pointing out flaws in the story. Despite that, it proved financially successful, earning over $1.2 billion globally. It became the thirtieth film and second within the franchise—after Furious 7—to surpass $1 billion. At the time of its release, it ranked as the third-highest-grossing movie of 2017 and the eleventh highest-grossing film ever made. Its opening weekend brought in $541.9 million worldwide, making it the largest global debut at that point until Avengers: Infinity War surpassed it a year later. This film led to a spin-off titled Hobbs & Shaw (2019) and a direct follow-up, F9 (2021).
