The story centers on a boy who helps his baby brother, who works as a secret agent, in a battle for adults' affection between babies and puppies. Voice actors include Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow, and Tobey Maguire.

The film made its debut at the Miami International Film Festival on March 12, 2017 before opening in the United States on March 31 through 20th Century Fox. Critics offered mixed reactions, though it performed well financially, earning $528 million globally against a $125 million budget. It was considered for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards, the Annie Awards, and the Golden Globes.

Following its popularity, the movie led to a franchise with two TV series—The Boss Baby: Back in Business and The Boss Baby: Back In the Crib—and a sequel titled The Boss Baby: Family Business, released in 2021.
