Leatherface 2017
A 2017 American horror film, Leatherface was directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, written by Seth M. Sherwood, and stars Stephen Dorff, Vanessa Grasse, Sam Strike, and Lili Taylor. This eighth entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise serves as a prequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013), exploring how the main character became who he is in the earlier films.
Following the box office performance of Texas Chainsaw 3D, a follow-up was considered under John Luessenhop's direction for filming in Louisiana. However, that project never moved forward due to lack of approval. To avoid confusing storylines from prior movies and instead take an unexpected approach, Seth M. Sherwood suggested to Millennium Films the idea of making a prequel focused on Leatherface while he was mentally stable, showing how events shaped him into the mentally disabled killer portrayed in previous installments. Maury and Bustillo agreed to direct after reading the script, impressed by its fresh angle on the franchise.
Principal photography began in Bulgaria in May and June 2015, using locations that mimicked Texas scenery and paid tribute to earlier films. Originally delayed by Lionsgate Films in 2016, the movie was released exclusively through DirecTV on September 21, 2017. Simultaneously, it also appeared on video-on-demand platforms and in select theaters across North America on October 20, 2017. Critics offered mixed reactions, and the film earned $1,476,843 globally. Due to this delay, Lionsgate and Millennium Films lost the rights to produce future Texas Chainsaw Massacre films.
