It (officially titled It Chapter One) is a 2017 American supernatural horror film directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Chase Palmer, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman. This first part of a two-part adaptation is based on the 1986 novel by Stephen King, following the earlier 1990 miniseries by Tommy Lee Wallace. The movie stars Jaeden Lieberher and Bill Skarsgård, with production handled by New Line Cinema, KatzSmith Productions, Lin Pictures, and Vertigo Entertainment. Set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine, the film follows The Losers' Club, a group of seven outcast children who confront the terrifying entity known as It. This creature appears as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, portrayed by Skarsgård, and terrorizes the kids while they also battle their own personal struggles.

The project started in March 2009 under Warner Bros., with David Kajganich initially set to direct before being replaced by Fukunaga in June 2012. Fukunaga left the project in May 2015, leading to Muschietti taking over in June. He drew inspiration from 1980s films such as The Howling (1981), The Thing (1982), The Goonies (1985), Stand by Me (1986), and Near Dark (1987), also referencing Steven Spielberg’s influence. In May 2014, the film was transferred to New Line Cinema division. Principal photography commenced in Toronto on June 27, 2016 and concluded on September 21, 2016, using locations from the Greater Toronto Area including Port Hope, Oshawa, and Riverdale. Benjamin Wallfisch was brought on board in March 2017 to compose the film's musical score.

The movie made its debut at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on September 5, 2017 and opened in the United States on September 8, available in 2D and IMAX formats. It became both a critical and financial success, breaking box office records and earning over $704 million worldwide. At that time, it was the third-highest-grossing R-rated film ever released, later surpassing $719 million through re-releases. Without inflation adjustments, It became the highest-grossing horror film in history. Critics generally responded positively, praising its acting, direction, cinematography, and music, calling it among the finest adaptations of Stephen King’s work. It garnered multiple awards and nominations, including a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie, and appeared on numerous end-of-year critics’ lists.

The sequel, It Chapter Two, followed in 2019, completing the story from the book. A prequel television series titled It: Welcome to Derry premiered on HBO in 2025, with Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise.
