Biographical dramaCrime comedy-dramaSports comedy-drama

A 2017 American biographical comedy-drama sports film, I, Tonya was directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Steven Rogers. The story centers on the life of figure skater Tonya Harding and her involvement in the 1994 attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan. The movie claims to be grounded in conflicting yet authentic interviews with Harding and her former husband Jeff Gillooly, indicating their perspectives may not be entirely trustworthy. The narrative uses darkly humorous modern-day interviews that break the fourth wall. Margot Robbie, who also produced the film, portrays Harding, while Sebastian Stan plays Gillooly and Allison Janney takes on the role of Harding's mother LaVona Golden. Additional stars include Julianne Nicholson, Caitlin Carver, Paul Walter Hauser, and Bobby Cannavale.

Though inspired by real events, the film repositions Harding as a victim, focusing on her role in the aftermath of the incident and broader criticisms she faced. I, Tonya debuted at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8 before its theatrical release in the United States on December 8, 2017 through Neon and 30West. It earned $67 million globally on an $6 million budget and was met with widespread critical acclaim, especially for the acting of Robbie, Stan, and Janney.

At the 90th Academy Awards, Janney received the Best Supporting Actress award, while the film also earned nods for Best Actress for Robbie and Best Film Editing. It garnered three nominations at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress for Janney, who also took home awards from the Screen Actors Guild and Critics' Choice Movie Awards. Robbie was similarly nominated for Best Actress in both ceremonies. At the 71st British Academy Film Awards, the film received five nods, with Janney winning Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
