A 2017 cyberpunk action thriller film, Ghost in the Shell was directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Jamie Moss, William Wheeler, and Ehren Kruger. It marks the first live-action version of the Japanese Ghost in the Shell franchise created by Masamune Shirow, featuring Scarlett Johansson, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Chin Han, and Juliette Binoche in leading roles. The story unfolds in a near-future setting where human and robotic identities become increasingly intertwined. Major Mira Killian, a cyborg soldier, tries to prevent a hidden terrorist while uncovering her own history.

Principal photography occurred at Stone Street Studios in New Zealand from February through June 2016, with extra scenes filmed in Hong Kong during June. The movie made its debut in Tokyo on March 16, 2017 before opening in the United States on March 31, 2017 in formats including IMAX, 3D, IMAX 3D, and 4DX. It earned $169.8 million globally against a production cost of $110 million.

Reception was divided; critics appreciated the acting, visuals, action scenes, cinematography, and soundtrack but found fault with the storyline and character growth. Controversy arose due to casting non-Asian actors—especially Johansson in the main role—leading to claims of racism and whitewashing within the U.S. However, Mamoru Oshii, who directed the original anime film, dismissed such allegations.
